The History of Smoking:
It Was Cool To Smoke – Now It Is Cool To Be Smoke Free!
Smoking cigarettes has been the scourge of the century. It all started a long long time ago – as far back as 5000 B.C. tobacco was used in shamanic rituals. Mayan carvings depicting tobacco use date back to 600 – 900 A.D & Native American Indians grew tobacco & smoked a pipe for religious ceremonies.
In 1612 settlers in America started growing tobacco for money. By the 1800’s people had begun chewing & smoking small amounts of tobacco – on average 40 cigarettes a year. In 1881 James Bonsack invented a cigarette-making machine, and went into business – The American Tobacco Company. By the early 1900’s there were several companies in the tobacco business, but it was still a small business.
During World War I, everything changed. Free cigarettes were handed out to soldiers on a daily basis. Back home, marketing targeted women too. The 1940’s (World War II) brought independence for women, who went out to work for the first time – and started smoking while their husbands were away. By 1946 the marketing machine had kicked in & cigarettes were widely marketed – it had become fashionable to smoke a cigarette. We all remember those old movies showing an elegant lady with a long slim cigarette, or the tough guy smoking with his buddies. There was, however, a rising public concern about health risks of smoking. At the time, believe it or not, most physicians smoked! Cigarette manufacturers put this fact to good use, using phrases such as “The Doctors’ Choice Is America’s Choice” to fool the general public. Since then aggressive advertising strategies ensured we thought it ‘cool’ to smoke.
Today, 66 years later, smoking has become a major health concern. Statistics show that in South Africa alone 44 000 die annually from smoking related diseases. The figure worldwide is a staggering 6 million per annum. The result is increased awareness at judicial levels – laws have been put in place to ensure that warnings are printed on all cigarette packets. Statistics & fact of the dangers of smoking have been widely publiscised, and people are becoming more health conscious.
This has lead to a new health trend – It’s Cool To Be Smoke-Free!
I am not going to go into the health risks associated with smoking. We all know what smoking does. Instead, here are some great reasons to quit:
- Health benefits – feel better, look better, live longer
- Feel more relaxed – it is a myth that smoking relaxes one. Smoking creates craving which is stress, which can only be relieved by the next cigarette, which then is perceived as relaxation – until the craving kicks in again ..
- Take control of your life again – take back your life – free yourself
- Feel good about yourself – no need to feel like an outsider & need sneak outside for a cigarette
- Breeze into that job interview confident that you can say “I don’t smoke”
- It feels great to do something for yourself
- Save the money and take yourself on a well-deserved holiday instead!
Cigarettes Are Expensive – So Is Bad Health!
Take a look at the cost of this habit:
- A pack of 30 = R42.00
- R42.00 x 365 days (in a year)
- = R15 330 per annum
The cost of smoking 30 cigarettes a day is a staggering R15 330.00 per annum or R1 277.50 per month! What could you do with an extra R15 330 per year?
On An Interesting Note: How much profit do manufacturers make from cigarettes?
- Total Production Cost for a pack of 20 = R13.81
- Average Profit is R1.49 Per Cigarette!!
- Or Profit of R18 – R20 Per Box!!
